Dear Friend, Your Worth is in Christ Jesus

It was as if a tsunami of insecurity had ripped through my heart. 

“All of these feelings of inadequacy just suddenly came pouring out,” I told my friend. “I don’t know what’s going on.”

I had just wrapped up my final year of university, and although I was satisfied with how I concluded my college career, I found myself wrestling with waves of anxiety. A whirlwind of thoughts swirled in my mind, all of which revolved around one question: Did I work hard enough?

My friend responded by sharing about a time when she, too, felt insecure. She graciously concluded her speech with this:

“Our worth is given to us by Jesus, not by anything else.”

Why is it so easy to lose sight of this truth?

Where does our worth come from?

In its attempt to cover the Truth of the Gospel, the world persuades us into believing that our worth is found in our intellect, money, awards, looks, social following, or relationships. I, too, have fallen prey to the lie that my value is in what I can do or what I have.

So, if our worth is not in tangible things, where does our worth come from?

Simply put, our worth comes from God. In Genesis 1:26-27, we are told that humanity is created in God’s image. This means that God created us in His likeness. GotQuestions.org puts it this way:

“The image of God (Latin: imago dei) refers to the immaterial part of humanity. It sets human beings apart from the animal world, fits them for the dominion God intended them to have over the earth (Genesis 1:28), and enables them to commune with their Maker. It is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially.”

Furthermore, Psalm 139:13-16 tells us that we are God’s workmanship, and He made us wonderfully complex. He knitted us together in our mother’s womb. He knew everything about us, even before we were born.

How comforting to know that the God of the universe made each of us! He created us to have a relationship with Him.

Jesus paid it all

When sin entered the world, man’s fellowship with God was broken. But God made a way for us to have communion with Him again, and that was through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross (Romans 5:8; Colossians 1:21-22).

In his letter to the Christians in Rome, the Apostle Paul reminded the believers that it was not their works that made them right with God. It was their faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross that made them righteous in God’s sight (Romans 5:1-11).

If you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, you have understood that you were once dead in your sins (Ephesians 2:1), but now you have inherited eternal life and are a child of God (John 1:12). And as His child, He has given you direct access to His throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).

Conclusion

So, what does this look like in our daily life? It means that we do not seek justification through our works, but we remember that we have been justified through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). It means that we do not find comfort in our money but in the richness of God’s love and mercy (Ephesians 2:4-5). It means that instead of being overtaken by anxiety, we surrender our insecurities to Jesus. He will comfort us, remind us of His Word, and sanctify us through the Holy Spirit (John 14:26-27; 1 Peter 1:2). 

These truths are particularly comforting to me right now, especially after struggling with the anxieties I mentioned above. My worth is not based on any of my earthly accomplishments but is given to me by my Heavenly Father.

Dear friend, remember that your worth comes from the one true God. He created you and sent His only begotten Son to die for your sins. You are His child, and He loves you very much! His love is unconditional; it is not based on anything we have done.
